CRITICS OF "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - Season 1"
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The show is at its best when it deals with the ways in which she is torn between two cultures... and when it depicts how Sabrina's avowed feminism conflicts with aspects of her religion.
Is it too much to expect that a show about the difficulty of deciding between the light and the dark would, I dunno, literalize that conflict with a swoony bad influence?
The longevity of Sabrina's adventures has yet to be determined, but with Shipka and the gang signed on for the full ride, I'd gladly follow this witch to the moon and back.
This is a show that's willing to both revel in the witch fantasy and to think about its limitations in a way I've never quite seen a TV show do before...
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina may traffic in ghouls and devil-worshippers but it doesn't take itself too seriously with a campy, morbid sense of humour. It's what keeps it light enough to have fun with.
If you're wondering about talking cats or one in particular (Salem), Sabrina's cat does not talk in this series, but it's got a much cooler bag of tricks instead.
There are no big pyrotechnics, just a wonderfully engaged and sure-footed performance that combines perfect measures of nous and innocence, strength and vulnerability.
